Flag Day

Today is National Flag Day. The observance commemorating the adoption by Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. I love the flag. I love what it represents. I love the National Anthem. I love our country.

Today we celebrated!

We played with red, white and blue Play-Doh.

We did a word search with flag words. Does anyone know what an estoile is? Halyard? How about a mullet? (relating to flags, not hair) The words were a little obscure...so obscure I had to pull out the dictionary...and then when the dictionary didn't have the words(!) I had to search on-line.

We decorated cakes like flags with Cool Whip, strawberries and blueberries.

We decorated and made pinwheels.

They don't really look like pinwheels you say? Well, that's because the basic pinwheel plan didn't work very well. Using firm cardstock and placing a push-pin through the paper and into a pencil eraser is a good combination for launching a push-pin dart! But not necessarily a pinwheel that actually rotates. Upon further research, if you want a more elegant design that "even spins when you're just walking past them" try this Flower Pinwheel from Creating Keepsakes magazine. It looks beautiful and I would love to try it some day, but honestly, it suggests 18 supply items plus an optional power tool!

We ended up leaving the kids pinwheel papers uncut and unfolded. And it was OK. I think they preferred the full page to show-off their creativity with stickers and markers.

Did you celebrate Flag Day? If not, Independence Day is just around the corner!

You are so creative, Donita!

Also - I keep meaning to ask you. Are you involved w/ a local homeschool organization and, if so, can you tell me more about it? Thanks in advance.

Talk to you soon,

I was going to ask if you would adopt me.... until I got to the part about the push-pin missiles. Maybe just sporadic visits with Donita the Wonder Mom?!? kmc
