Three Small Sewing Projects

I've been doing a bit of sewing lately.  With a hot machine, in the hottest part of the house, and flannel and piles of fabric it doesn't seem like an especially summery activity...except that we live in Arizona where summer is the time to avoid being outdoors.  Not to mention that I've had a couple quiet evenings at home alone, which always make for great sewing (or reading) time.

Last Saturday afternoon I decided I needed to make a floor quilt for a baby shower on Sunday.  I took my own baby to the craft store and we picked out these adorable flannel pieces.

I cut (a lot) of 6" x 6" squares and sewed them wrong-sides together with a big X.

Then I sewed all the individual squares together and snipped the exposed seams to make this simple and adorable quilt.

I have discovered that babies don't need much...diapers and a few blankies can go a long way!  So that was my gift!

All wrapped up and ready to go.

This weekend I finally got around to making a "Mama's Bag" for my sister.  Months ago she mentioned that she really liked the large floral fabric on the right hand side, but I only had a small scrap left over from another project.  I returned to the craft store many more times over the summer hoping to find it again, but to no avail.  I finally decided on the other two fabrics in all their summery and retro coolness.

Here they are laid out bigger.

I used the same pattern as for my bird purse from Handmade Home and ironically enough, this ended up being a bird purse too!

I used the small swatch of large floral fabric along the bottom and then pieced the rest together in a couple hours.

That inside fabric makes me think of my Grandma Baxter and I had a difficult time deciding whether it should go on the outside or the inside.  The way the lining and handles are sewn, however, makes this purse reversible.

And lastly, I've been working on place mats.  Once again I am using scraps of old quilting fabric, left over navy canvas and worn jeans.

I've made three so far, but I still have plenty of scraps to use.  Unfortunately, not all the quilting squares were the same size...so the place mats are all different sizes!  I suppose I could have done some math to make them work out, but you know what they say?  Don't do math in public!

Are you working on anything creative lately?
