Let Me Back Up

We started Kindergarten Homeschool last week.

We did this for one very simple reason: God confirmed to us, over and over, that homeschooling is the right path for our family.

We did not choose it because our local school is bad (it is one of the best schools in the district).
We did not choose it because we think teachers are awful (we have a lot of family and close friends who are great public school teachers...both objectively and subjectively).
We did not choose it because we have Education experience (we do not).
We did not choose it in order to get around the age cut-off (a 7 day difference)
We did not choose it even because we always dreamed of doing such a crazy thing (because a short number of years ago I was saying no-way-Gudalupe!).

Never-the-less, God moved in our hearts and here we are at the beginning of our homeschool adventure. I do not know how long it will last, but we plan to stay the course until we get God's direction to do otherwise.

Here's Calvin on his first day. (With his favorite blanket! Maybe seven days and a year make a lot of difference?!)

We are using My Father's World curriculum. We spent the first two weeks learning about creation, reviewing numbers and letters, reading books, reading Bible stories, cutting and gluing, making books, etc.

I don't know what normal kindergarten classes do, but our house sure seems to be filled with construction paper, scissors, library books, glue sticks, puzzles, pencils, number charts, alphabet letters, markers and the like.

So far, it has been an easy addition to our day. The curriculum is designed to take 60-90 minutes per day and we fall right into that range. We sit down and do the focused work while Andrew is napping. And then I'll add related tid-bits here and there. Calvin has been excited to do "My School Work."

I'll keep you posted.

We are still so new to all of this that I don't even know a good question to ask. So if you have any good advice I'll take it unsolicited.

Thank you for the overview, Donita! I think we may look into the My Father's World curriculum for next year.
