Fabric Bowl and Nature Table

I spent a few hours this week working on this super cute and easy fabric bowl recommended by my friend Michelle.  Starting with a package of clothesline from the hardware store and a few scraps of fabric we wrapped it all together, zig-zag stitched it in place and ended up with a bowl.  Calvin helped me wrap the fabric and use the sewing machine.  Because the finished product appears quickly it was a satisfying project to work on together.

I used two different fabric prints for the bowl alternating them at irregular intervals.  I am so happy I added red contrasting thread for the zig-zag stitching.  Isnt' it cute!  It also has a texture reminiscent of quilting so my hands are very happy holding it.

One of the reasons I scoured my old email searching for the fabric bowl pattern in the first place was because I had this little table in mind. I've seen Nature Tables highlighted by two different homeschooling moms, both of whom live on farms in the East.  Initially I discounted the idea as un-doable because, you know, we live in the desert!  There will never be golden and scarlet leaves gracing the table.  It is unlikely we will ever run across wild mushrooms when we explore the woods.

But as the number of rocks and sticks on my kitchen counter multiplied I began to reconsider the idea of a Nature Table.  Perhaps my kids would like a place to display their found treasures.  Perhaps it could be educational and enjoyable for us all.  So, today we have a Nature Table, rather, an old night stand attempting to be a Nature Table.  We added a couple nature books, put the binoculars in the drawer and went on a nature walk in the wash looking for treasures.

We have a jar of rosemary, a ceramic bowl of pine cones and corks, and a few salt-dough bowls of rocks. The fabric bowl will be more kid friendly than the breakable bowls and may be the prefect spot for sticks or feathers or seeds. I can't wait to see how it gets used!

I can already tell I need to make another one.  The boys are fighting over this one!  And I can't wait to have an excuse to use some cute yellow fabric or blue polka-dots or lime green stitching.

I need to learn to make a bowl like that! My desk at school could use some cute receptacles.
